by Alison Nowak, Southwest Minneapolis Patch

Newberry award winning author Kate DiCamillo kicked off the first event of Washburn High School Foundation‘s Inaugural Artist Series last Thursday, which is designed to raise money for the school.

Planters of evergreens, ribbons and lights adorned the entry to the auditorium creating a holiday atmosphere as parents waited in line for tickets. In a gym next to the auditorium, kids perused a table of books written by Kate DiCamillo including favorites Because of Winn-Dixie and Tale of Desperaux.

Washburn students and their parents sold stacks of animal crackers, bottles of water and sodas to raise additional money for the high school, which like many in Minneapolis, is strapped by years of budget cuts.

Families settled in their seats to listen to Kate DiCamillo talk about her life as a writer. There was an excitement in the air as Jeffrey Prottas, Washburn Foundation’s executive director, took the stage to introduce DiCamillo and the host of the evening, Dan Olson of Minnesota Public Radio.

“Kate DiCamillo is a good friend of Washburn and a good friend of Minneapolis,” Prottas said. He stressed the importance of community events at Washburn that raise money and increase the school’s visibility. DiCamillo generously offered to match any funds raised through the event.

After his introduction, Olson stepped onto stage and donned a Washburn baseball cap to audience applause. As DiCamillo arrived on stage, Olson’s first order of business was to give her a present, an apron with the words “Uff Da” printed on it. The gift was a joke, referring to DiCamillo’s well-known dislike of cooking.

After DiCamillo tried on the apron, Olson started the interview, asking whether there was a time in DiCamillo’s childhood when she “understood the importance of stories.”

DiCamillo talked about the time she plagiarized a story she read as a child for a school assignment, ultimately ending up in the principal’s office for lying. The lesson she learned was not just about honesty: “If you tell a story, everyone pays attention to you,” she said. From then on, DiCamillo told her own stories.

After a few more questions, Olson opened up the interview, inviting children to come to the microphones to ask their questions. A large line formed on both sides of the auditorium with kids posing questions like, “What was your favorite book when you were little?”

As children asked questions, DiCamillo answered frankly, showing her sense of humor and sometimes asking them questions back before answering.

“Aren’t you hot in that coat?” she asked one of the questioners before giving an answer.

When asked what the most important part of the writing process was, DiCamillo said it was “making a deal with yourself to show up.”

As part of this amazing evening we encourage you to visit www.funds4books.com through December 16th (code: mlrs) to purchase much needed books for the Media Center.
